xbmc

It has recently been noted that a few of people who have not yet updated their current “Eden” XBMC on their Apple TV’s and are trying to do so are running into a few issues with “update unsuccessful”. Well we thought it would be a good idea to run through a quick tutorial on how to install a fresh version of the popular media player XMBC running the latest version “Frodo”.

Before we get started here are some prerequisites that you must have prior to the install.

  • Apple TV 2 (jailbroken running 5.2.1 or older)
  • Mac computer (Terminal) or Windows (PuTTY)

Right lets get started!

1 Launch Terminal/PuTTY

Please make sure that the Apple TV and the computer that you are using are all on the same network.

2 Connect to your ATV via SSH

3 You will need to connect using the following command :

ssh root@[Your Apple TV’s I.P. Address]

You can find your Apple TV’s IP address by heading over General>Network

Just a heads up, if you run into an issue with authentification all you need to do is simply copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press enter.

rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts

6 Any security prompts that pop up simply agree to them by typing “yes” (no quotations) and click enter.

7 You will then be asked to type in your password. Unless you have changed it then the default password is “Apline” (no quotations)

8 Right you are now going to need to  1 by 1 copy and paste the Following Commands into your Terminal (one command at a time). Press enter after you finish each one and wait to move on to the next.

  1. apt-get install wget
  2. wget -O- http://apt.awkwardtv.org/awkwardtv.pub | apt-key add -
  3. echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
  4. echo “deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list
  5. apt-get update
  6. mkdir -p /Applications/AppleTV.app/Appliances
  7. apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
  8. mkdir -p /Applications/XBMC.frappliance
  9. reboot

9 Once you have completed all of that your Apple TV will boot and reload the menus. Locate XBMX and you should notice that you have launched “Frodo”

Congratulations you’ve just installed XBMC “Frodo” on to your Apple TV. Now all you need to do is add some fun addons to it. You can simply do that by adding the Fusion Drive and installing popular addons from there. To learn how to install the fusion drive, read our tutorial “Installing popular addons using the fusion drive”
