The question that seems to get asked most frequently… “Why should I jailbreak?”
Well i’m going to give it a go and give the run down on what a jailbreak actually is and why it will be a benefit to you.
First things first, what is a ‘jailbreak’ ?
If you’re sat there with your iPhone 4, 4s, 3, 3gs….or iPad 1, 2, 3(new) etc you all know that you can install thousands of Apple apps from the AppStore, so what’s all this about jailbreaking my device you may be wondering, why do I need it, what does it offer me? These are all questions that will be answered right here. iOS jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system through the use of hardware/software exploits — such devices include the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and second generation Apple TV. Jailbreaking allows iOS users to gain root access to the operating system, allowing them to download additional applications, extensions, and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store. Jailbreaking is a form of privilege escalation, and the term has been applied to privilege escalation on other computer systems as well.
In simple terms, jailbreak lets you do some pretty cool stuff to your iDevice!!
Why Not Appstore:
Let’s look into this as simply as possible. Apple’s rules and regulations that are part of the AppStore are very limiting. The apps that are listed in the sections below are not able to be part of the AppStore since they break one or more of “Apple’s rules”. Basically these rules are set and are in place to keep control of the iDevice platform within Apple’s full control. For example, some of these rules include: patching system files such as SpringBoard, allowing apps to run in the background, running apps out of the “sandbox”, and simply doing things Apple decided that they don’t want you to do often for reasons to their benefit, not yours (such as tethering).
Let’s get this straight, Jailbreaking is not unlocking!
Jailbreaking your device is completely risk free and is legal. Once you have jailbroke your device everything that was there before will work exactly the same. Jailbreaking only adds more features. Jailbreaking is risk free and cannot void your warranty. If needs be, all you need to do is do a full restore in iTunes at anytime to get back to a factory state. Rest assured, you are not the only one out there, the jailbreak community is now well over 10,000,000 strong! Check out the iJailbreakthis terminology to get to grips with the ‘lingo’ that is used. A few reasons to jailbreak your device…….in as few words as possible. Well, sort of.
Cydia is like the App Store, it’s lets you install applications right to your device without a computer. Really, the correct way to say it would be the App Store is like Cydia because there was Cydia before there was the App Store. There was also an app called Installer before that, but now Cydia has taken over as the best program to use to get jailbroken apps, tweaks, themes and tools onto your iDevice. Anyway, Cydia is your go to spot for everything jailbreak on your device. In order to get Cydia you must have successfully jailbroken your device. If you think that you have jailbroken your device but do not see Cydia on your springboard then you have not correctly jailbroken your device and will need to try again.
Moving on from Cydia, and more in depth about what you can get from within Cyida. First of all, once you have jailbroken your device you will want to download Winterboard from Cydia. Winterboard is an application available in Cydia that allows users to theme graphical elements of their SpringBoard. Whenever you download a theme, sometimes a tweak from Cydia most of the time you will have to activate from within Winterboard. Winterboard will add an icon to your springboard for easy access.
Here is an example of a theme called Omega HD that was installed on to an iPhone 4 using Cydia and Winterboard.
Right, what’s next. Let’s say that you’re in Safari (or as many of us are now using Google Chrome), and you realise that you had turned off your WiFi or 3G an hour ago to save a litte juice in your battery. You’re now trying to load a page on Edge, which is never good! Normally, you would have to shut down Safari/Chrome head to regular settings, turn WiFi or 3G back on, go back to the browser and try to load the page again. Very long and unnecessary process. Well with a simple tweak available on Cydia called SBSettings you can add toggles to your device that are easily activated by a simple tap or swipe gesture. With SBSettings, you just swipe your status bar, enable the WiFi or 3G, and resume safari where you left off. When done, swipe again, and disable the battery draining wifi or 3G options. This works from with in anything really, let’s now say that you are in the middle of an epic level on Angry Birds Rio….. you need to turn your brightness up really quick so that you see where you are aiming the things. Simply swipe or tap the status bar to display your SBSetting turn the brightness up to where ever you need it to be, swipe or tap again to close and continue to kick some arse on your game. You can add custom toggles such as brightness, location settings and much more. It really is a great tweak that will not only save you time when using your device but also add great functionality at the same time. SBSettings is must have.
Moving on, BiteSMS….. What a fantastic app! This is probably one my favourite apps available on a jailbroken iPhone. What does it do? Well, BiteSMS gives users a unique experience by offering them the capability to customise the way that they use and interact with their messaging system. You can choose what buttons you’d like to show up on your quick reply windows such as send, open, close, mark for later, Skype, FaceTime, templates, and much more. Basicially, BiteSMS adds a fantastic SMS system to your phone which contains a quick reply. So you can reply or compose a text message from anywhere, even your lock screen! Right going to quickly run through a few other amazing things you can do on a jailbroke device so that I don’t boar you all to death!
Folder Enhancements. When Apple introduced the folder categories to the firmware back on iOS 4.0 we all thought it was brilliant. Unfortunately they limited you to 12 apps per folder. With a simple tweak you can now add unlimited apps within one folder. Great little tweak if you are a gamer and have over 100 games, you don’t really want to have loads of folders with games in, you just need one! Another great feature is that it will let you put folders in to folders, great for you super organised people out there. Fantastic clutter reducer too.
Take control of your device, after all it is yours! Would you want to own a MAC/PC where only Apple/Dell decided what you could do with it? Jailbreaking opens your device up to you deciding what to do with it. You can install a BSD unix subsystem and SSH. You can use a mobile terminal. It’s just like a real mini computer! You can download programs like iFile or Prompt from Cydia that will give you full access to your device’s root files, so you can decide what needs to be there and what doesn’t. A must have!
Remember, these are two completely different things but it is worth covering in this post. If you are wanting to unlock your device to open it up to any carrier then the only way to do this is to actually jailbreak your device. The unlocking apps will require system level patching and activation all of which can only be done via jailbreaking. Note also that you need not unlock to jailbreak. They are two separate things.
Finally, Installous. Installous is an iOS application developed by docmorelli and originally created by puy0. Installous allows users to download, install, update and share cracked iOS applications in a clean and organized fashion. It has now been installed on nearly thirteen million different devices. Installous runs identically to the AppStore. This can only be accessed through a jailbroken device.
There are litterally hundreds of reasons to jailbreak your deivce, with very very little reasons not to. If you are now considering jailbreaking then check out the tutorials on this site, leave us a comment if your struggling. Take note of this though, there is nothing to worry about with the new software tools available such as Absinthe and RedSn0w jailbreaking your device can be done in a few simple steps. Remember if you need to remove the jailbreak for whatever reason, all you need to do is simply do a full restore on iTunes to get back to factory settings. One more note, remember to do a full backup on iTunes or iCloud prior to jailbreaking your device.
